Her words carried me to the vast openness of endless sea and into the pitch black night of the cosmos, while looking at the sky and wondering what is possible. Dreams interwoven with longing and wisdom. Always pointing towards compassion and ethics, two strong pillars to be found in each of her works.
„When I was young, I had to choose between the life of being and the life of doing. And I leapt at the latter like a trout to a fly. But each deed you do, each act, binds you to itself and to its consequences, and makes you act again and again. Then very seldom do you come upon a space, a time like this, between act and act, when you may stop and simply be. Or wonder who, after all, you are.“
Ursula Le Guin, „The Farthest Shore“
Her books teach not to judge by the cover: what is hidden behind labels of fantasy, science fiction and children stories contains deep wisdom and insight. They teach, that wisdom is not only to be found in science books, but in poetry and literature. And that these forms often times are far more able to let the offered insight penetrate, past the mere intellect to our innermost heart. And how my heart sings, time and time again, reading those beloved texts!
„If you can see a thing whole“, he said, „it seems that it’s always beautiful. Planets, lives. … But close up, a world’s all dirt and rocks. And day to day, life’s a hard job, you get tired, you lose the pattern. You need distance, interval. The way to see how beautiful the earth is, is to see it as the moon. The way to see how beautiful life is, is from the vantage point of death.“
Ursula Le Guin, „The Dispossessed“
May her words make us all dream of the possibilities that friendship, wisdom and compassion have to offer.
May her passion for ethics and deep looking resonate within us and accompany our words and actions.
Thank you Ursula Le Guin!
„To believe that our beliefs are permanent truths which encompass reality is a sad arrogance. To let go of that belief is to find safety.“
Ursula Le Guin „Lao Tzu: Tao Te Ching: A Book about the Way and the Power of the Way“
